University Life Marketing and Communications (UL MarCom) proactively supports the units of University Life in achieving their missions to help every student succeed by facilitating outreach to the Mason community in an authentic, clear, and organized manner while providing insight into the behavior, interests, and needs of a diverse student population through research and data analysis.
About the Position:
George Mason University is dedicated to the vision that all members of our community can thrive. Mason has a wide range of preventive mental health and well-being resources offered by multiple departments and units.
The Public Health and Prevention Outreach Manager serves as a liaison among units with the goal of creating community awareness campaigns that increase the visibility of Mason's mental health and well-being resources and programs. The Manager systematically and consistently disseminates and promotes these resources along with coordinated educational messages about the benefits of the programs.
This position works as part of a team of marketing professionals in the University Life Marketing and Communications unit, and reports to the Director of Marketing and Communication for University Life with a dotted line to both the University's Chief Mental Health Officer and Chief Well-Being Officer.
The position is eligible for hybrid in-person/telework options under DHRM policy 1.61.
Supports the marketing efforts of mental health and well-being community awareness campaigns by helping to build and execute marketing plans, marketing campaigns, messaging documents, communications tools, and assessment tools by:
Engaging and contributing to brainstorms and idea generation;
Developing templates and examples to guide the creation of collateral material; and
Developing lessons learned and SOP templates for project management.
Working with colleagues in the UL MarCom unit and outside vendors to manage the design, execution, timely delivery, and effective use of:
Print and digital collateral, event premiums, and other visual marketing;
Social media outreach and broader social media campaigns;
Website content revision;
Email, SMS, and other outreach methods;
Working with stakeholders to encourage website language revision along an annual timeline; and
Promoting stakeholder programs and initiatives by developing content for university communications channels.
Marketing and Communications Planning:
Leads stakeholders to develop an annual project calendar that guides the timing of marketing and communication and unit program activities;
Partners with stakeholders to build and execute marketing and communications plans and campaigns that:
Identify key target audiences;
Create messages designed to reach those target audiences;
Detail and promote appropriate marketing and communications methods;
Measure relevant outcomes; and
Guide stakeholders in using marketing and communications best practices to achieve unit goals.
Social Media and Web Site Management:
Partners with web designers to develop updated design and plan for unit websites;
Manages updates and maintenance of relevant websites;
Manages social media presence; and
Contributes to the development and implementation of social media plans.
Supervision of Student Employees:
Supervises student employees to support departmental marketing projects;
Assigns and tracks requests and projects to ensure timely completion;
Advises students through regular meetings with student employees;
Provides career development for student employees via mentorship and individual engagement; and
Completes staff evaluation processes and performance improvement plans as needed.
Establishment of Strong Relationships:
Establishes relationships with key stakeholders and develops an in-depth understanding of unit communication and marketing needs;
Establishes productive working relationships with key stakeholders;
Participates and engages in pertinent and necessary meetings in stakeholder units;
Engages in key committees important to stakeholder communication and marketing goals and outcomes; and
Represents stakeholders in public relations opportunities such as admissions events, orientations, and information sessions.
High school diploma or equivalent;
Professional experience in marketing project management (typically obtained in two years);
Working knowledge of social media management and implementation (Instagram, X, Hootsuite,);
Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
Demonstrated organizational management and problem-solving skills;
Ability to accurately and efficiently meet a multitude of deadlines and responsibilities;
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented workplace;
Ability to be present on Mason's Fairfax campus at least three days per workweek; and
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and comfort working within diverse populations.
Bachelor's degree in related field;
Experience in marketing for public health, mental health, well-being, and/or health care-related programs;
Experience with content management systems, including WordPress CMS, and with maintaining an organization's website;
Demonstrated experience with project management platforms;
Experience supervising, managing, and/or advising students in a higher education environment;
Knowledge of email management software; and
Skill in supervising, managing, and advising students in a higher education environment.
