For 80 years, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has provided top-quality, affordable, and accessible music in the Alexandria, Virginia regional area through its highly respected, innovative, and professional performances and programs. In addition to contributing to the cultural life of the community, ASO is dedicated to strengthening music education in our schools, fostering a life-long appreciation of music and expanding the availability of quality music to underserved audiences. ASO is a fully professional orchestra and the largest performing arts nonprofit organization in the city of Alexandria. Recently, the Board of Trustees launched the public phase of a $2 million fundraising campaign, “Making Music Together,” having already procured more than $1.5 million toward that goal.
The Director of Development and Marketing’s primary responsibility is to grow, nurture, leverage, diversify, and serve the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra’s patron base.
The Director:
• Develops and implements a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, and special events. The Director works closely with the Board and Executive Director to develop fundraising goals and strategies that align with the organizations’ mission and values. • Plays a leadership role in conducting ASO’s Making Music Together Campaign with the goal of securing new and increased support for ASO. • Develops and executes effective donor communication and marketing materials. Develop a compelling message that resonates with potential donors, creating donor recognition programs, and crafting targeted appeals that drive donations. • Ensures donor acknowledgement and engagement with the organization. Plans and executes special events such as galas, donor dinners or other fundraisers. • Has responsibility for operating, maintaining, and enhancing the use of the Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge and Financial Edge, including gift entry and acknowledgement, reporting, records management, and review. Prepares, distributes, and presents reports pertaining to fundraising, ticket sales, audience development, and certain accounting and financial matters with an attention to detail, timeliness, and clarity. • Develops and manages all elements of the ASO’s budgets for fundraising, marketing, and promotion. • Monitors and analyzes fundraising data to evaluate performance and adjust strategies as needed. Tracks donor engagement and retention rates, analyzes revenue streams and makes data-driven decisions to help the organization achieve its fundraising goals. • Serves as an internal and community-wide spokesperson advancing the Orchestra’s case for support. • Attends Orchestra concerts, special events, and other activities as an advocate for building audiences and participation.
REPORTING AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS • Reports to the Executive Director and collaborates closely on fundraising initiatives. • Supervises work of the Campaign and Finance Associate pertaining to fundraising activities for the Annual Campaign and the Making Music Together Campaign. • Collaborates with: o Development Committee o Making Music Together Campaign Counsel and the Campaign Committee o Director of Operations • Oversee activities of volunteers associated with fundraising events and activities.
A minimum of three years’ experience as a development officer with supervisory responsibility for staff and volunteers and working knowledge of Customer Relation Manager (CRM) products and accounting software. • Strong and in-depth experience and documented success in a leadership role in multi-faceted capital, endowment, and operational fundraising campaigns. • Grant writing and corporate solicitation experience. • Experience in oversight of marketing, preferably in a performing arts setting, with oversight of social media and design. Able to leverage Blackbaud systems for patron development. • Demonstrable success in staff motivation, evaluation, and advancement. Desired • Experience in managing and utilizing Blackbaud Raisers’ Edge and Financial Edge, and related information technology resources. • Knowledge of and passion for orchestral music. • Knowledge of the patron and business community of Alexandria, Virginia, and surrounding communities.

The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, which produces a subscription season of 10 concerts, performs at the Alexandria Birthday Celebration and works with Alexandria public school students, has a $900,000+ budget and earns income through ticket sales and program book advertising. It receives support from the Symphony Orchestra League of Alexandria (SOLA), Alexandria Commission for the Arts, the Virginia Commission for the Arts and multiple foundations, businesses, and individuals.
