Position Summary
Arts & Sciences is looking for an experienced communications manager and strategist to serve as Director of Marketing and Communications. The ideal candidate will have substantive experience across an array of key communications and marketing functions supporting a large, complex organization, possess a strategic mindset and exceptional interpersonal skills, and have the leadership qualities needed to motivate and mentor a highly talented team of professionals.
The Director has responsibility for the oversight and management for all school-level marketing and communications functions, and leads the execution of a comprehensive, integrated marketing and communications plan to support the vision for Arts & Sciences. Specifically, the Director is responsible for crafting the brand positioning and key messages to advance the schoolâ™s core mission, reputation, and strengths, and promoting the Deanâ™s initiatives and objectives through a variety of effective communications, campaigns and strategies, taking a strategic, data-driven approach to all key marketing and communications initiatives ranging from media relations and digital outreach to development communications and recruitment campaigns. The Director serves on the Deanâ™s senior leadership team and works closely with administrators, faculty, and staff on a range of strategic projects. The Director provides direct support to the Dean for speech writing, presentations, events, and thought leadership. The Director will also partner with colleagues in the undergraduate affairs office, Admissions, and the Office of Graduate Studies to develop, execute and evaluate marketing strategies to engage prospective and incoming students. support new student recruitment goals and student experience efforts.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for professional development, recruitment strategy/hiring and general management functions of assigned staff.
Leads A&S Communications team: Inspire and lead teams of individuals with varied backgrounds and skills. Hire, manage, and develop staff. Evaluate staff performance.
Oversees the development of internal communications, including publication of the weekly Ampersand newsletter.
Oversees marketing and communications support for strategic planning and implementation efforts.
Oversees the development of external and alumni relations communications, including publication of the Ampersand magazine and the Deanâ™s annual holiday message.
Develops and implements strategies for science and research communications (eg Danforth Science Communicators group and Hold That Thought podcast series).
Develops and implements key development communications (with University Advancement).
Oversees photography, videography and other multimedia content development.
Strategizes and develops with other senior officers on programming, planning and/or policy development.
Communications Strategy, Planning, and Leadership: Serves on the Deanâ™s senior management team. Strategizes with the Dean and other senior officers on a variety of matters pertaining to the development and implementation of new marketing and communications campaigns.
Provides ongoing strategic and long-term planning.
A&S strategic communications plan: as part of the Universityâ™s and the Schoolâ™s ongoing efforts to support institutional priorities.
Develops and implements a strategic communications plan in support of the Deanâ™s priorities and objectives. Develops executive communications materials and/or communications plans as needed, either for the Dean or other senior members of the Deanâ™s leadership team.
Advises the Dean and senior leaders on crisis communications.
Oversees the planning and implementation of strategic messaging across print, web, and social media communications; including the Arts & Sciences website and social media channels.
Partners with University Marketing and Communications to implement a strategic communications plan to increase the national and international visibility of scholarly achievements, faculty thought leaders and new academic initiatives.
Works with Vice Deans of the College and Graduate Office on student recruitment marketing plans and tactics and advises on Undergraduate and Graduate Student communications Advises on science communications and helps ensure strong collaboration between units.
Supports and collaboration of A&S Computing, oversees digital communications.
Create strategic objectives, measures of success and comprehensive year-long orientation activities.
Oversees the development of impact reporting for annual communications and targeted campaigns. Generates and analyzes data to evaluate marketing and communications efforts and inform ongoing planning.
Collaborates with other staff leads on the dissemination and communication of information from Deanâ™s Office to departmental leadership in order to support and promote a culture of informed, data-driven decision-making at all levels.

Budget/financial oversight of assigned programs. Manages a large annual budget including production of a semi-annual alumni magazine.

Preferred Qualifications
Masterâ™s degree in related field. Five years of relevant experience in higher education setting.
Track record of successful communications, branding and/or thought leadership strategy formulation and implementation for complex organizations with multiple stakeholders.
Extensive management experience in a higher education setting and a deep understanding of the mission of a liberal arts division.
Exceptional writing and editing skills.
Extensive experience in multimedia production.
Demonstrated success in initiating and leading complex projects and initiatives.
Experience in generating and using data to drive plan development and evaluation.
Leadership in school and university wide initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to inspire and lead teams of individuals with varied backgrounds and skills.
Experience in managing and implementing large scale, highly visible projects and initiatives.
Superior writing and editing skills.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related field and seven years of relevant experience or Masterâ™s degree in related field and five years of relevant experience.

Salary Range
$82,500.00 - $145,200.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
