POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Communication & Marketing Manager (9761CG) collaborates with the OTE team to plan, develop, and implement various communications strategies, initiatives, publications and public relations. This position is responsible for writing, editing, and managing the design of external OTE communications, including print and digital publications, social media messaging, websites, videos, event publicity, and other marketing materials. This position is the chief strategist of internal communications for staff, faculty, students and stakeholders. This position provides leadership while managing diverse communications functions and ensuring high-quality output that strategically and consistently conveys key messages to new students and their parents, garners support for OTE from key constituencies, as well as support for outreach initiatives and priorities. The individual in this position will be responsible for collaboration, writing, development, production, and distribution of OTE communications. Duties are completed under the supervision of the Director of OTE and as a member of the Team. Additionally, this person will work centrally with the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE), University Relations (UR), and the Office for Student Affairs (OSA) to support broader, undergraduate communication initiatives and strategies. Ultimately, this position will be critical to our efforts in ensuring our practices are in alignment with University brand standards and protocols.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communications – Content Strategy, Implementation, and Execution (50%)
Develop, maintain and implement strategic communications goals for OTE including print publications, web, video, social media, and outreach.
Advise, collaborate and consult with OTE content providers regarding communications projects and deadlines managed within their area as well as initiatives, strategies, and issues resolution.
Project manage and execute key publications including Gold Book, and Parent Calendar.
Develop innovative and strategic communication plans for multiple OTE programs that engage U of M students and stakeholders and connect to short and long-term program goals.
Coordinate with graphic designers, Printing Services and/or University Relations on multiple communication projects including print, email, web, MyU Web portal, social media, and video.
Facilitate bids and cost analysis of all projects being mindful of budgetary needs and tracking actual expenses.
Facilitate mass emails sent to various student populations through Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
Manage OTE website tone and voice, and ensure content and images are compliant with University branding standards.
Monitor and compile communications and marketing metrics for emails, newsletters, mobile apps, and social media.
Conduct focus groups to obtain feedback from student populations on communication methods and strategies for enhancement.
Solicit feedback from current and prospective audiences to refine communication and branding strategies.
Review all communication (print, web, social media, ect) to ensure Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is considered in all of our communication outlets.
Develop the social media content and determine presence; making recommendations for social media strategies.
Use analytics and data to inform and finesse communications strategy.
Internal and External Marketing & Public Relations (30%)
Build relationships and establish and maintain communication channels with colleges, departments, and other constituencies.
Work centrally with the Office of Undergraduate Education, University Relations and Office for Student Affairs to support broader undergraduate communication initiatives.
Serve as the communications liaison with: OSA, Housing & Residential Life (HRL), Office of Equity & Diversity, UR, MyU, and other units as needed.
Develop a cohesive and comprehensive internal and external marketing plan to promote the vision and mission of OTE to all constituents and stakeholders.
Develop messaging and materials for internal and external presentations, publications and marketing fairs (i.e. Admissions Confirmation events) in an effort to connect the audience to OTE and campus-wide resources.
Engage with local and national media, complying with the University’s protocols.
Attend and host photo sessions for media relations and marketing purposes.
Provide strategic leadership in marketing and public relations based on knowledge of best practices.
Manage bid processes for any student promotional items we provide within OTE.
Recruit, select, train and supervise an undergraduate student Design Intern.
Recruit, select, train and supervise an undergraduate student Digital Media Intern.
Conduct annual performance reviews for employees and provide them with thoughtful and constructive feedback on their work performance.
Orientation & Transition Experiences Support (10%)
Provide support to any initiatives implemented by Orientation & Transition Experiences (such as and not limited to Orientation, Welcome Week, Student Transition Experiences) or the Office of Undergraduate Education.
Support office colleagues as necessary within the reporting lines of OTE and OUE.
Conduct research and leverage metrics to ensure that needs are met with the student populations we serve.
Support the value of DEI within OTE
Participate in professional staff training, retreats, meetings and projects.
APPOINTMENT & COMPENSATION: salary range $50,000 - $60,000
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Art or other related field or non-communication degree.
Six years of professional experience working with communications strategies and processes. Non-communications degree individuals must have six years of progressive responsibility in communication.
Strong organizational skills to effectively manage multiple projects from inception to completion, adhering to deadlines, within budget and with high quality.
Demonstrated understanding of project management skills including multitasking, prioritization, and the ability to maintain project momentum over periods of time.
Master’s degree in Arts, Communications, Marketing, Higher Education or related field.
Experience working with students and an understanding of their development and transitional needs as related to a higher education environment.
Strong interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to work effectively with groups and organizations across the University.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Ability to build consensus with diverse groups of people.

Experience working with media relations professionals.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Adobe Creative Cloud, web development, video, social media and graphic design.
