We seek to hire a part-time marketing communications manager who will maintain a positive public presence for our school; assist with our upcoming branding project and subsequent program development; and carry out ongoing communication activities. Our ideal candidate will plan, design, and deliver all aspects of Beacon Academy’s marketing and communications activities (including messaging, storytelling, channel strategy, campaign design assistance, collateral oversight, execution, and impact assessment.) The candidate will seek to deeply understand Beacon Academy’s unique brand and reputational needs, creating stories that highlight our many differentiators and building excitement about Beacon Academy’s mission, vision, and innovative learning environment. Storytelling will be shaped by articulating our core messages in memorable and meaningful ways, and communicating them throughout our vehicles – web, email, social and traditional media, video, events, influencers/opinion leaders, word of mouth, and educational fora.
The marketing communications manager will work under the supervision of the admissions and advancement directors to prioritize activities and tailor messaging and vehicles to our target audiences of prospective students and their families, feeder school staff and their communities, current students and families, alumni, donors, influencers and opinion leaders, and local businesspeople. The candidate will have the ability to work on and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, ensure excellent quality control, and create a steady stream of positive news. This person will be an excellent and versatile writer who can persuade diverse audiences, from prospective 13-year-olds to members of Evanston’s business community. They are also adept at updating, maintaining, and aligning website information; coordinating multiple projects; consistently pitching new stories; conducting ongoing program activities; overseeing the development of a promotional video; and producing compelling written, visual, and audiovisual content for social media. Finally, coachability, flexibility, and an ability to work well with others are integral attributes sought for this position.
Assist in our branding process by coordinating and scheduling activities; posting and tracking surveys and results, and participating in meetings/workshops to support branding process activities while learning about the school and its communication objectives.
Assist in developing a detailed strategic communication plan and execute it, under supervision.
Steward the brand by aligning all messaging and vehicles, to ensure we speak with “one voice”.
Identify, create and distribute compelling content across all communication channels that keep Beacon Academy top of mind and inspires target audiences, including:
Create, post, and pitch a steady stream of news and human interest announcements/ stories through written material, photos, and videos on social media, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, etc.
Keep media kit current and create/pitch stories.
Communicate ongoing news.
Manage ongoing media relations and support crisis communication activities.
Assist in developing a promotional video that messages our key differentiators.
Assist in development and revision of other admissions materials; manage the development of collateral materials and coordinate work by freelance support.
Participate in admissions activities, events for students and families, and extracurricular and experiential programming to document activities and promote the life of the school.
Assist in communication for the Head of School, as needed.
Continually refresh and update website communications.
Reach out to opinion leaders/trendsetters for partnerships.
Engage internal and external stakeholders to elicit their support and promotion of the school.
Create a working budget with regular updates on expenses and activities.
Track implementation against internal metrics and create reports for the admissions and advancement directors, head of school, and board of directors.
Support network building.
Actively support our school’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives
A bachelor’s degree in communication, PR, marketing, or a related field, with a minimum of three years of full-time experience in marketing communications.
Exceptional written communication skills.
Outstanding storytelling and documentation skills that lead to engagement on traditional prose formats as well as digital media.
A positive and collaborative spirit toward working with others, a can-do attitude with attention to detail, ability to multitask, and interest in innovative secondary education.
Demonstrated digital marketing communications experience, including social media and website content creation, with an ability to analyze and provide metrics of success.
Organizational and project management skills, and a history of successful project delivery.
Media relations skills and story pitching.
Experience with a non-profit organization is a plus.
Facility with survey software and web content management is a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing responsibilities, the employee is required to talk and hear and have close, far, and peripheral vision.
The role requires standing, sitting, reaching, and light lifting.
Typical half-time work hours (20 per week) are limited to Monday through Friday, but weekend days/hours are required occasionally depending on the demands of the department and school events.
COVID-related: Work takes place in-person at school and school is meeting in-person, with mandatory masking. Vaccination is required for all employees and students unless a medical waiver is granted (99.5% of our staff, faculty, and students are vaccinated.)
