The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a national organization representing approximately 3,000 local health departments (LHDs) nationwide, has an immediate opening for a full-time Marketing/Communication Specialist, Preparedness and Publications.
The Marketing/Communication Specialist, Preparedness and Publications position will serve be responsible for branding, marketing, and building a robust communications strategy to promote initiatives and products related to NACCHO’s Public Health Preparedness program portfolio, as well as provide general publications and communications support to other sectors of the organization, as needed.
The Specialist contributes to the advancement of local public health practice by performing a range of responsibilities related to communications and publications development through traditional, online, and social media. General responsibilities include writing, substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading a variety of publications intended for broad distribution to local public health professionals; providing desktop publishing and graphic design expertise; assisting with cross-functional marketing activities; developing and maintaining publications-related webpages; and implementing and enforcing quality-control processes across the organization. The individual is also responsible for a comprehensive communications strategy to promote NACCHO’s preparedness programs and related conference.
The Specialist typically performs analysis, research, writing, or project management and can complete projects or components of large-scale projects/programs with little supervision. Specialists may have frequent contact with outside organizations or internal customers that may involve project coordination, information sharing, or resolution of problems. They may be required to represent NACCHO at meetings.
Serves as managing editor for NACCHO Connect, a twice-monthly e-newsletter; the NACCHO Voice, NACCHO’s catch-all blog; and coordinates the “News from NACCHO” column in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice.
Serve as lead staff liaison on marketing, communications and product branding for NACCHO preparedness team, including developing preparedness program promotional materials and driving content for The Preparedness Brief.
Assists with marketing and communications activities for NACCHO meetings including the Preparedness Summit and the NACCHO Annual Conference.
Create marketing materials, graphics, data visualizations, infographics, and design printed and online materials in support of events and other public outreach.
Reviews appearance of publications during production to ensure they adhere to branding and are visually consistent.
Works with Publication Manager to ensure timely updates to NACCHO’s publications bookstore and other websites.
Uses NACCHO’s social media channels as appropriate to further communications and marketing objectives.

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, or relevant professional field with a minimum of 2–5 years of relevant experience or advanced technical training; or equivalent combination of education and experience, including a relevant certification.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word.
At least intermediate proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
Meticulous copyediting skills for grammar, punctuation, style, voice, brevity, clarity, etc.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
