The Director of Marketing & Communications (DMC) directs and oversees all internal communications and media/external communications for the University in support of the goals set by Board of Trustees, President, Provost and Vice Presidents. The DMC acts as primary media spokesperson for the University and has oversight responsibility for the Office of Marketing & Communications when the Chief Marketing Communications Officer is away from the office.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
Develop, direct and manage the strategic direction of BGSU’s media relations for local, regional, national and international story placement and effectiveness. Provide direction for identifying media targets and prioritizing their relative importance to the University.
Develop, direct and manage the strategic direction of BGSU’s internal communications including the development of an internal plan that includes a broad range of communication components for students, faculty and staff.
In conjunction with the Chief Marketing Communications Officer (CMCO) and the peer Communications (DMC), develop strategy, direct and manage the University’s social media and new media efforts.
Supports the President, Provost, Vice Presidents, Deans and other senior administrators as the University Spokesperson to better communicate with internal and external audiences.
Develop and manage the implementation of a crisis communications plan for internal and external audiences with media relations, web and myriad other emergency communications components. Liaison with the Office of Emergency Management and the Student Affairs care team as well as University crisis/emergency preparedness team.
Is responsible for developing an extensive annual media relations plan designed to position BGSU as a premier learning academy and one of the best in the nation.
Serves as the University’s primary spokesperson on media inquiries.
Serves as the president’s primary “ghostwriter” for communications to faculty, staff and students; and media statements.
Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
Strong writing and editing, crisis communications and crisis management experience, media relations experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, communications, marketing or English required. The following experience is also required.
8 to 10 years communications or public relations with demonstrated experience in working with the media.
5 to 7 years management experience with demonstrated increased responsibilities and accountability.
Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 361. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package.
