Posting Summary: The Office of University Communications at the University of Virginia seeks a Marketing Writer to help tell the story of the University while promoting the culture, life and thought-leadership of the institution.
The Marketing Writer is responsible for the writing and editing of print and digital materials for marketing and other projects across a range of subjects and platforms. These may include storyboarding for online and multimedia projects, periodicals and online journals and oversight of content written by vendors and freelance writers. The Marketing Writer is also responsible for maintaining consistent stye and standards for University Communications and acts as arbiter of the work of all written materials developed by or for marketing and marketing purposes. The Marketing Writer has primary responsibility for ensuring cohesion and consistency of brand messaging, as developed both through research and through agency brand positioning and core concepts.
The Marketing Writer will be responsible for: - Serving as a creative lead in the development of clear persuasive and compelling narratives that support the organization's communications, marketing and strategic objectives. - Ensuring all content supports both project-specific and department goals. - Working collaboratively with colleagues in Creative, University News, Media and Public Relations Teams and coordinating the work of freelance writers and proofreaders. - Taking ownership of certain projects and initiatives that have a significant dependence on narrative strength or line of sight with related projects and brand messaging.
The successful candidate will have a clear sense of storyline and an appreciation for the importance of narrative in advancing a clear and compelling view of the organization. Furthermore, he or she will have strong project management and communication planning skills coupled with and ability to understand and support strategic priorities.
A bachelor's degree is required. This position is a full-time University Staff position.

Preferred Specific Degree/Training: Master's Degree in communications or related field and/or equivalent years of experience
Required Minimum Level of Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Required Specific Experience: Experience working as a writer in a variety of formats including general marketing, advertising copywriting, branding and other forms designed to change perception and engage public audiences.
Understanding and experience in using language to affect strategic objectives is essential.
Preferred Minimum Level of Experience: Considerable - 4 to 7 years
Preferred Specific Experience: Experience working as a marketing writer in a branding agency with overlap in higher education.
Experience in developing brand voice and persuasive style is extremely helpful. Experience with corporate/executive communications/relations writing a plus.
