Director of Marketing and Communications for the College of Visual and Performing Arts
The George Mason University College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) invites enthusiastic, energetic, and forward-thinking applicants for the position of Director of Marketing and Communications. This position will report to the Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. This position is responsible for the planning and execution of all marketing activities for enterprises managed by CVPA, including seven academic units (i.e., School of Art, School of Dance, School of Music, School of Theater, Arts Management Program, Computer Game Design Program, and the Film and Video Studies Program), the Potomac Arts Academy and the Virginia Serious Game Institute, as well as the Center for the Arts and the Hylton Performing Arts Center—which include the professional presenting series of Great Performances at Mason and Hylton Presents.
The incumbent will understand and demonstrate effective team leadership, and understand the complexity of the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
The Director of Marketing and Communication is responsible for:
Creating and maintaining the messaging and brand imaging;
Creating and implementing marketing plans, to include printed materials; Web presence; and appropriate print, broadcast and digital advertising;
Supervising the marketing team that is responsible for the creation, production and distribution of marketing and communications vehicles;
Working as a member of the Senior Staff, creating and monitoring the marketing budgets;
Supervising the ongoing maintenance and improvement of the Web presence;
Ensuring the accurate and timely reporting of marketing activities and results to the appropriate members of the CVPA team;
Assisting the development staff in the creation of the materials required for their work;
Negotiating media contracts to ensure the greatest value for all marketing and communications expenditures; and
Creating and implementing a research strategy that analyzes the effectiveness of marketing efforts, and reporting the results of the research to the Dean and other members of the Senior Staff.
The incumbent will have supervision of the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications, Web and Digital Marketing Manager, Publications Manager, Hylton Marketing and Special Projects Manager, and the Playbill and Advertising Coordinator. The successful candidate will partner with the directors of the schools and programs in CVPA, as leaders in supporting programs and initiatives to advance Mason's Strategic Goals. This individual will also collaborate with university faculty, staff, students and off-campus stakeholders.
Master's degree in a related field, or a bachelor's degree in a related field and equivalent professional experience;
Substantial experience in marketing, communications, public and media relations, and advertising; and
Demonstrated leadership ability and supervisory experience.
Seven or more years of experience in marketing, communications, public and media relations, and advertising in both professional arts venues and academic environments;
Seven or more years of previous leadership ability and supervisory experience in a public university or arts organization;
Proven effective written and verbal communication skills;
Experience in using data and assessment to inform decision-making;
Knowledge and ability to work with diverse faculty, staff and student populations;
Experience with supervision and management of multiple areas; and
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, student learning and development, and willingness to being an active member of the campus community.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
